Zoo Walk

On yesterday's walk, I decided to forgo the humdrum pounding of an indoor treadmill and headed to our local zoo for sun, animal sightings, and exercise.

I had just got back from Buffalo visiting my sister and her husband for a few days and realized that she is a "birder". She has an app on her phone which identifies bird calls and sounds native to the area in which you live. So, I thought I would give at least identifying bird calls a try and I have to tell you, it is fun. The app is called Merlin and it is relatively easy to use. It was fun hearing the birds and then the app identifying what birds were making that sound.

Try it! The app is free.

Here are the birds that I heard yesterday.

I am by no means a "birder", but this app made listening to birds fun and educational.

Next on the zoo visit list was a real treat, feeding the giraffe. I've never done that before and it was a whole lot of fun. The giraffe knew that it was time for their fun feeding when the zoo keepers came to the top of the deck. The giraffe came up to the deck and just stood there and waited with their heads looking up just waiting to be fed. That is behavioral conditioning at its best. Take a look!

Also on my zoo visit, I saw a few "friends" out and about. Most of them were trying to find a shady spot since it was a little warm. No, it was actually hot!

So if you visit your local zoo or even better yet, travel to other zoos, consider getting a membership and the cost will certainly pay for itself in a very short time. You will definitely get your money's worth from buying a membership. Also, even better yet, when you purchase a zoo membership, you can get either discounted tickets or free admission to other zoos around the country. Well worth the price if you like to visit different zoos. Here is the list of reciprocal zoos: https://www.peoriazoo.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/2024-Reciprocal-Facilities.pdf

I get the grandparent membership which allows me to take my grandchildren and it cost $100 for a year. Unlimited visits!
